near many physician offices, are dedicated to outpatient care.

Imaging (MRI), CT scanning, stereotactic mammography and bone
densitometry. Craven Surgery Center is a state-of-the-art complex

Craven Heart Care
Beginning with coastal Carolina’s first cardiac catheterization
performed in July, 1988, Craven has continually expanded its
cardiac services to include the latest in interventional and
surgical procedures. Craven has built a comprehensive cardiac
program led by skilled physicians and highly trained cardiac
support staff. Cardiac catheterization is a valuable tool in
the diagnosis of heart disease. Interventional cardiac procedures
including atherectomy, angioplasty, cardiac brachytherapy and
stent placement open cardiac arteries allowing blood to flow
freely, which can prevent damage from a heart attack and minimize
the need for surgery. When surgery is the recommended treatment,
our skilled cardiac surgeons employ the latest surgical techniques,
including off-pump coronary artery bypass and valve replacement,
to restore the heart to optimum performance. Since 1993, thousands
of coastal Carolinians have benefited from the lifesaving cardiac
catheterization and surgery they had performed at Craven Regional
Medical Center.
Highly specialized inpatient care units are designed to care
specifically for cardiac patients during their recovery. Immediately
following surgery, patients are cared for in the cardiovascular
intensive care unit (CVICU). Usually within 24 hours, patients
are moved to cardiovascular intermediate care (CVIMC) where
they are sitting up and walking as soon as possible. The staff
of the cardiac care unit (CCU) provides care for patients following
cardiac catheterization and pacemaker placement. Patients with
various heart problems and undergoing diagnostic testing to
determine heart disease are cared for in CCU and the Cardiac
Intermediate Care Unit (CIMC.)
Our commitment to your cardiac health doesn’t stop after
you leave our care. Craven Regional Medical Center was the first
hospital in the east of offer outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation,
a lifestyle modification, education and exercise program designed
to help maintain heart health. A cardiac support group and the
local Mended Hearts Association help individuals with cardiac
disease and their families manage the resulting lifestyle changes
through friendship, education and support.

Craven Cancer Care
From
diagnosis to treatment and often cure, the cancer services at
Craven Regional Medical Center are the most advanced in the
coastal Carolina region. The program, accredited by the American
College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, was the first to offer
life-saving radiation therapy to the region. Two linear accelerators
generate radiation therapy for nearly 500 patients annually
each undergoing numerous treatments. Board certified radiation
oncologists prescribe the radiation regimen that can include
intensity modulated radiation therapy, the most advanced form
of the life-saving treatment. Medical oncologists, specialty
trained in the treatment of cancer, care for patients in a dedicated
inpatient oncology unit where certified oncology nurses understand
the unique needs of cancer patients and their families. A patient
and family resource room houses literature about the disease
and offers Internet access to web-sites focused on the latest
advances in cancer treatment and cure.
Diagnostic Imaging is often the first step in the diagnosis
of cancer. At Craven, we employ the latest technology available
to help physicians discover cancers and begin planning the patient’s
recovery. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanning, is recognized
as the most advanced, effective non-invasive cancer diagnostic
tool. When surgery is required, skilled surgeons and anesthesiologists
perform complex procedures in a modern operating environment
complete with the latest in precision laser technology.
Annually, the Medical Center sponsors and participates in a
number of community initiatives to diagnose cancer in its earliest
stages and to increase awareness of cancer prevention, treatment
and cure. Low or no cost screenings, for diseases such as prostate
and skin cancer, have alerted more than a thousand people to
seek treatment. Teams of employees from the Medical Center can
be found at the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life
fundraising and educational event.
